Bernadette M. Jansma received her PHD in 1997 at the Max Planck Institute, Nijmegen, on lexical access in language production (Promotor Pim Levelt, Antje Meyer). In 1997-98, as Postdoc fellow at UCSD she investigated the time course of lexical access using ERP (Mentors Marta Kutas, Thomas Münte), funded by McDonnell Pew and German Academic Exchange Service personal grants. From 2002 on, she study how the brain selects biological and syntactic gender and she participated in two German DFG ‘Schwerpunkt’ (gravity) programs to investigate overt speaking with EEG/ERP/fMRI.  Since then main focus is on the interface of perception and language representations. Bernadette shares her expertise with colleagues from the clinical field to better understand language problems related to metabolic diseases and epilepsy (collaboration with Estela Rubio Gozalbo, Vivianne van Kranen-Mastenbroek); and with Milene Bonte in the context of language development. She also collaborated with Social Psychologist Rob Ruiter in the context of health communication.

She contributed to building the Cognitive Neuroscience research line as well as related training programs, among them the FPN research master “Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience”, the graduate school “EU Marie Curie Initial Training Network NeuroPhysics (EU FP7 ETN 2009-2013)”, and the NWO graduate program “Methods in Neuroimaging” (2010-2014). She always supports interdisciplinary collaboration and co-initiated, for example, the starting up of the Center for Integrative Neuroscience (CIN) and the Maastricht Center for Systems Biology (MacsBio). She likes to take care of people, and has been Dean of the Faculty Psychology and Neuroscience (FPN) from 2009 to 2016, as well as of the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences in 2016-2018 to prepare the transfer into the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE). She was Master Director of FPN 2019-2021. She loves to supervise VWO6 students in “profielwerkstukken (empirical year paper)”, BA, MA and PhD students in their projects related to psychology, brain, and language.
